Born from scraps Korean soldiers smuggled from US military camps, this delicious staple was originally created to help sustain the starving Korean troops during the armistice during the Korean War in the early 1950s.
We top ours with melted American cheese -- the creamy texture and mild flavor works beautifully with the spicy stew. The soup is made with #gochujang and an anchovy-kelp base which gives it a natural umami boost, and the homemade spam and ramen noodles only make it that much better.
The word budae translates to military units (or troops) and jiggae means stew, hence why we call this dish Spicy Army Base Stew! #InsaWOTW
